Greyson Chance, Oklahoma born and raised singer whose rise to fame began with his debut on Ellen in 2010, has returned to music with his latest single “Rearview Mirror.” A tender piano ballad, the song marks the starting point of a new era. In his own words, “writing ‘Rearview Mirror’ has ultimately been a study in patience… I’ve been trying to make something that felt bigger than me.”
As a long time fan who has been following his journey for almost fifteen years, “Rearview Mirror” clearly marks a new sonic and emotional maturity to his catalog of work. In fact, each era Chance has entered throughout the years has pushed the boundaries of genre - a somewhat confining concept. In other words, his lyricism is imbued with brazen authenticity and sometimes blunt metaphor, bringing listeners solace. His lyrics don’t draw wild comparisons but sit in the pain, and sometimes discomfort, of the ordinary.
With his upcoming body of work delving into his southern midwest upbringing and the challenges of a fallout with his brother, lyrics like “Now I am pacing my room just waiting for you and realize I can never go back” are raw and honest. They are, simply put, relatable.
Watching Greyson Chance’s sound evolve and grow over the years to capture the self-reflective, emotional, and mature young man he has become is a joy and pleasure. Embarking on a new chapter of his career and constantly asking himself, “What would Joni Mitchell do?” Chance’s tender yet resolute lyrics landmark him as one to watch. He shared with The News Stan(d):
“Rearview Mirror is the first song to come of a very inward chapter in my career, and I am grateful now to have taken the time to make something I’m very proud of”
